Steve was born and raised in Kenya and Uganda and has worked in several countries in Africa over the last 28 years. Steve has a broad range of expertise in all aspects of project development, management, cross cultural training, capacity building, and founding and building local non-Governmental Organizations in Africa. Much of Steve’s work focused on children at risk.
In fact, he was the Country Director for SOS Children’s Village of Malawi Trust for almost nine years, and pushed the development of programs outside the traditional SOS Model. The goal was to ensure SOS was more community focused and based and benefited greater numbers of children. Other areas of expertise include working to improve support services to those affected by the HIV & AIDS pandemic and, most recently, to those who have been sexually assaulted.
Steve has served on numerous Boards in Malawi and regionally in Southern Africa. Steve is also working on a Ph. D. in human services and is always keen to expand his knowledge and experience.
Why I love my job: “The opportunity to organize an international conference on critical issues related to children and youth in care is amazing. It brings together many aspects of my past – working with SOS Malawi and SOS KDI – in a way that will help SOS BC take great strides forward to improve how the care system is delivered in Canada. The chance to be involved in a process that may very well transform the foster care system in BC is not to be taken lightly! Children and youth are the future and we need to ensure they have all they need to thrive and reach their potential. The 2021 Conference will highlight this and challenge many to step up and keep promises made.”
