Shaniah Hillis
SOS Education Lead and Teacher

My name is Shaniah Hillis and I am from the Tla’amin and Gitxsan Nation.

I am currently working at SOS Children’s Village BC as the Education Lead and Teacher.

I grew up on the Sunshine Coast in the Tla’amin Community and moved to Vancouver to finish high school and further my education at the University of British Columbia through the Indigenous Teacher Education Program. I received my Bachelor’s Degree of Education with a focus on Indigenous Education in 2019 then worked in the Squiala Community in Chilliwack as a Grade 3/4 teacher for three years.

Education has always been a big part of my life. From learning about traditional and cultural teachings from my family and elders in my community to learning in school, I have always wanted to soak everything in and share what I have learned with those around me. I enjoy being in nature and being able to experience the world around me. I enjoy learning hands-on and being able to immerse myself in what I am doing.

Being a part of SOS Children’s Village BC means a lot to me and I am grateful for the opportunity. It has been wonderful connecting with the children and youth in the Village and finding ways to support, encourage, and advocate for each of them. Through SOS Children’s Village BC, I can make a difference in the lives of our children and youth as I support their educational needs. Whether I am helping with their schoolwork, communicating with their teachers, or facilitating learning opportunities through our after-school program. I am happy to do what I do.
