"I am so proud of his achievement"

– Foster Parent

This year, I watched Kathleen and Braden walk on stage to receive the B Honor Roll Awards. To see Braden honored with an unexpected award for his positive attitude during the school camp outing was so wonderful... Braden was terrified to go to camp because he didn't have successful times, but this time he was voted the most popular and he just whooped with joy with this surprise honour. I am so proud.

The recreation and camp opportunities, the academic and literacy assistance, and all the social opportunities at the Village; these supports make such a difference and it really has changed the lives of these kids. Thank you SOS BC! We went through so much and at times it was overwhelming, but it truly is about the kids.

"I want to feel better."

– Dana

When Dana reached the point of wanting to move forward, she knew she could use some help, but she was wary of professionals, having had a negative experience with a counselor in the past. She was worried about how often children in foster care get "labeled" by professionals who sit behind a desk taking notes, not bothering to get to know the "client" aside from their struggles. But as she looked out the window from her home in the Village and saw the SOS BC Counselor, Mark Thomas shooting hoops in the Village sports court she was intrigued. She asked her foster mom if he was really a counselor and was told that yes he was. She smiled, nodded and said, "Ok, I'll go back into counseling again".

Some of the children living in foster homes are able to come to a place in their lives where they want to resolve their pasts and move on toward their futures. This is often easier said than done. Many of the kids SOS BC is taking care of are apprehensive about who they let into their worlds. It takes time and trust! And sometimes all what's needed is to simply letting go of your title and professional uniform in order to reach the kids where they are.
