Stain Removal Guide

 

The following tips are presented as a courtesy to our customers and the general public. Treasure Cottage does not warrant the effectiveness of any of these stain removal tips and assumes no liability for any damage they may cause. Please use at your own discretion.

 

Beer Spills:

Apply hydrogen peroxide to dried stains on white cotton. Sponge stains on coloured fabrics with a white vinegar.

Grass Stains:

Apply rubbing alcohol liberally to stained areas before laundering.

Perspiration Stains:

Rub stained areas with white vinegar before laundering. Hint: keep vinegar handy in a squirt bottle to saturate such stains before putting clothes in the washing machine.

Wine Spills:

Liberally apply club soda to the stain and then sponge up soda and wine.

Blood Spots:

Douse spots with hydrogen peroxide (if fabric is bleachable) or dilute ammonia before rinsing in cool water. Note: heat will set bloodstain.

Grease or Oil Marks:

Gently rub in talcum powder, cornmeal, or cornstarch and let set. Then brush or sponge the powder away.

Coffee and Tea Stains:

Wipe clean with a paste made from baking soda, water, salt, and white vinegar.

Fruit & Vegetable Stains:

Stretch fabric tight and pour hot or boiling water slowly over the stain so that the water runs through the fabric.

Gum Gook:

In hair, work in vegetable oil or an oil based cream until gum is loosened. If the gum is on fabric, rub the area with ice until gum hardens and can be removed.

Pet Urine:

Dampen area with equal parts of white vinegar and water. Blot dry.

Bathtub & Sink Stains:

Scrub with a paste made of cream or tartar and hydrogen peroxide.

Water Spots on Stainless Steel:

Rub area with a clean, soft cloth dampened with white vinegar.

Mustard Stains:

Soak stained area with diluted ammonia before laundering.


.

Rust Stains:

Rub with lemon juice and salt and then rinse thoroughly with water.

Brass & Copper Tarnish:

Mix together equal parts of salt and flour and then add enough white vinegar to make a paste. Rub into tarnished area.

Tarnish from Eggs:

Rub off the tarnished area with table salt.

Dirty Vinyl:

Scrub down with equal parts of rubbing alcohol and water

Mildew:

Scrub walls and floor with a brush dipped in borax and water. For books or papers, dust with talcum powder, cornmeal, or cornstarch. Let set for two days and then brush off.

Stickers:

For price stickers and similar labels saturate them with vegetable oil or baby oil before removing.

Scorch Marks:

Soak fabric in hydrogen peroxide and rinse. Or alternate rubbing the area with a lemon slice, then wiping with a dampened sponge until stain disappears.
