There are approximately 500 dedicated foster parents who reside within the South Fraser Region (Surrey to Aldergrove). In keeping with SOS Children's Village commitment to community, SOS BC has programs that aim to support and strengthen foster families who do not reside at the SOS BC site. These programs are accessed by foster parents for their foster children via referral from the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
The Lifeskills Outreach Program offers strategic opportunities to the extended foster care community. Foster children have lived through trauma and therefore often exhibit an unreasonable persistence of behaviours, wishes, emotions or means of gaining satisfaction beyond the age when it is appropriate and accepted. SOS BC recognizes that every child is an individual. Accordingly the therapy and support services offered by this program are tailored to respond to each child on a case by case basis.
Current programs available:
- Anger Management Groups
- Therapy
- Summer Camp Costs (preference given to children/youth who have never experienced camp)
- Literacy Tuition
- Art Expression
A Portrait of the Program: Art Expression
An interview with Frauke Reddick, one of the art
therapists at SOS BC. She explains what art therapy
is and how it helps foster children supported by the
Lifeskills Outreach Program to process negative
emotions in an acceptable and positive way. She also
talks about the wonderful mural all the children
in the Village worked together to paint.
Neurofeedback Therapy Explained
This is a fascinating demonstration of a high-tech,
emerging therapy called Neurofeedback, which SOS
Children's Village BC has had great results with. David
Bowes, one of the therapists at the organization, uses
this technique to help foster children that suffer from
attention deficits, anxiety, depression, behavioural and
sleep disorders, migraines, and other brain disorders by
teaching the brain to function better.
