Sounds of Learning Music Program

Free for foster children and at risk youth

The Sounds of Learning Program is a musical quilt of experiences: from one-on-one and group music tutoring, to experimentation with recording and performing. Connecting kids with the culture of music and encouraging children to find their ‘voice’ of expression, the program builds skills while healing hearts.

CONNECTING THROUGH MUSIC

Sounds of Learning Music Program engages children and youth in pro-social activities that contribute to their success in other areas of life. SOS Children’s Village BC believes that services and support provided to the most vulnerable members of our society contributes to the strength of the community.

The program provides an opportunity for children and youth to connect with one another, increase their self-esteem, and learn positive forms of expression.

WHO IS THIS PROGRAM FOR?

The Sounds of Learning program gives priority to children and youth with the following risk factors:

  • At risk of entering the care system
  • School truancy, consistent suspensions, or expulsion
  • Negative peer group involvement (exposure to drug and alcohol use, criminal behavior, etc)
  • Isolation, social skills deficits, or peer rejection
  • In care (foster care or residential care) or recently exited the care system
  • Parental care issues (incarceration, untreated addiction/mental illness, etc)

The program also engages children and youth who are not considered to be ‘at risk’ who act as positive role models and mentors.

WHAT DO PARTICIPANTS LEARN?

The Sounds of Learning Program involves group and individual music lessons (instruments, voice, song writing, recording and performing). Individual lessons and Music Therapy are available where appropriate.

General/Group:

  • Rock Band Jam sessions
  • Group Guitar class – Beginner
  • Group Guitar class – Intermediate
  • Group Piano class – Beginner
  • Drum/Percussion Circle
  • Glee Choir
  • Music Interaction Group
  • Song writing Group
  • Recitals/Concerts
  • Recording Project

Private:

  • Private Lessons (requires child specific referral and approval)
  • Music Therapy (requires child specific referral and approval)
