South Asian Arts: P.A.N.J. performs Bhangra

P.A.N.J, or Pehchaan Apni Nachdi Jandi, translates to “Expressing Yourself through Dance”.  Bhangra, a North Indian Folk dance, is their expression and excellence, passion and competition is their drive.

Bhangra has come a long way in the 21st Century and has recently taken the entertainment industry by storm. In the 1970s and 1980s, many Punjabi singers from Southeast Asia and the United Kingdom emerged, setting the stage for Bhangra to become a hot new trend in dance music.

The P.A.N.J. Bhangra team was formed in June 2006 in Surrey.  It is a mixed team of boys and girls aged 16 to 21, each with a passion to compete internationally.  In the past year, the team has placed in the top 3 in two major competitions.  It is the spirit and raw energy of bhangra that keep the group inspired about their art.
