Kutapira: Youth Percussion Marimba Ensemble
Presented by
Kutapira's joyful sound is inspired by two traditions: the beautiful marimba melodies of Southern Africa and the driving rhythms of the Caribbean played on authentic percussion instruments from Zimbabwe, Cuba, and West Africa. The result is a powerful, dynamic performance that is as much fun to see as to hear.

A kind of alchemy has occurred around Kutapira. Five talented young percussionists who love to play world music connected with a couple of professional artists who are both virtuosic musicians and great teachers. Their serendipitous meeting with Jack Duncan and Myles Bigelow inspired a vision: to form a percussion-based ensemble that blends African and Caribbean rhythms and take it on the road. A road less traveled has taken Chris, Sangito, Jeremy, Theo, and Kai to Ucluelet, Cortes Island, Powell River, and Golden and as far as Aberdeen, Scotland for the World Festival of Youth Arts.
Their instant popularity among the most gifted young performers on the planet shows that Kutapira has indeed been sprinkled with a bit of gold dust. For further proof, look no further than Balmoral Castle where Kutapira played a command performance for the Queen!
