The first Treasure Cottage located in the village of Steveston in Richmond opened in 1992 and today approximately 70 volunteers work in or support the shop.

Treasure Cottage Kerrisdale is also modeled after the successful Treasure Cottage in Steveston and opened in July of 2006.

Our third location is on Lower Lonsdale in North Vancouver and opened November of 2007. The new store is in a great location that is large enough to carry all product lines and furniture.

We Need North Vancouver Volunteers!

Treasure Cottage relies on volunteers to perform a variety of tasks, including sorting donations, pricing, display, stock turnover, keeping the store tidy, store maintenance, public relations, customer service etc. Volunteers are asked to work 1 x 4 hour shift per week and will be trained on the job by their team leader or designated co-worker. There is an operations manual in the workroom that describes store policies and practices, a pricing guideline and communication book for internal communications. Volunteers are asked to make a minimum 6 month commitment to Treasure Cottage. At the end of 6 months of service each volunteer receives a silver SOS Children’s Village pin. The gold SOS pin is awarded to those with over 5 years of service – there are many volunteers who have achieved this level at the Steveston location.

Volunteers are welcome to shop in the store, they are asked to complete their purchases ½ hour before the store closes to avoid delaying the cashier from finishing their day. Pricing is the same as customer pricing.

Treasure Cottage volunteers form close bonds with one another and also enjoy a sociable environment together.

About SOS Children’s Village BC

SOS Children’s Village is located in Surrey on a two-acre site where phase 1 opened in the Spring of 2001. It consists of 5 family homes, each headed by a specially selected and trained foster parent who cares for a number of local children who are in need of care. The children attend local schools and participate in the usual activities of children their age, they hopefully will remain with their SOS families until they have completed their education and become independent young adults. A volunteer Board of Directors and a professional staff oversee the activities of the SOS village.

Dr. Hermann Gmeiner founded the first SOS Children’s Village in Imst, Austria, following WW II in 1949. Today, there are SOS Villages and auxiliary services such as schools, hospitals and retirement homes for foster parents in over 450 villages around the world.
