SOS Children's Village BC is a uniquely caring community of foster parents who are part of the Ministry of Children and Family Development's network of foster parents. The Ministry of Children and Family Development are the guardians of children who are in foster care in the Province of British Columbia. SOS BC works in co-operation with the Ministry of Children and Family Development in order to provide quality, enhanced support services to foster children and foster parents. There are five homes on site, providing family care for up to three foster children in each home. SOS BC has a primary commitment to those children who require long term care.
In the spirit of inclusive foster care, continuity and permanence, SOS is committed to encouraging and maintaining links between children, their siblings, their biological and extended family and other significant people in their lives as long as that is deemed in the child's best interests.
Each child has needs based on their unique life experiences and the plan for the care of that child must be developed based on those particular needs. Identifying and building on individual strengths is critical. This means providing opportunities and funding for a variety of activities from therapy and anger management groups, to music lessons and literacy tutoring, camps, recreation and specialized education.
Foster parents are supported in order to generate and maintain the personal resilience required to work with foster children. Foster parents who live on the village site are given one-to-one support by the Village Director, on-going training, relief provision, alleviation from house repairs and maintenance, as well as crisis counseling if the need arises.
