The SOS BC Village Program is a deliberate process of giving foster families the necessary opportunities, relationships, networks and supports to raise the kids in their care successfully. It is a model of care that targets issues from a preventive aspect. A community of families live together as neighbors on 2.5 acres of land which is situated inclusively in an urban area of Surrey. The supportive social network strengthens bonds, expands opportunities to resolve challenges, and engages kids in friendships.
Cultural Development is critical for all kids in foster care. Nearly 51% of the 9,000 plus kids in foster care in the province of British Columbia, are Aboriginal. SOS BC is intentional in its approach to enhance their self esteem by creating events and opportunities for children to connect with their Aboriginal heritage through smudging ceremonies, story and talking circles and celebration events.
